Bacteriology Culture and Identification

Identification of infecting bacteria is vital to planning effective treatment and in many cases culture is the only method to identify these organisms. Swabs taken nasal secretions and abscesses are cultured on special media in controlled environments to isolate pathogenic bacteria. Growth characteristics, cellular size, shape and staining characteristics, along with special metabolic and chemical reactions are evaluated to identify each organism isolated.
