Identification of infecting bacteria is vital to planning effective treatment and in many cases culture is the only method to identify these organisms. Swabs taken nasal secretions and abscesses are cultured on special media in controlled environments to isolate pathogenic bacteria. Growth characteristics, cellular size, shape and staining characteristics, along with special metabolic and chemical reactions are evaluated to identify each organism isolated.
PAVL offers bacterial culture and identification services for suspected CL abscesses in sheep and goats, as well as for nasal secretions (snot) and skin lesions in rabbits.
Culturettes for sample collection are available here (link to culturettes) and bacterial culture submission forms are here (link to Bacterial Culture form).
Immunologic bacterial identification via bacteria specific monoclonal antibodies is available for Pasteurella, Bordetella and Pseudomonas. These are the bacteria most commonly implicated in Snuffles. These tests do not require the bacteria be cultured; samples are tested upon arrival in the laboratory with results in 24 hours are less. Also, a simple Q Tip swab is suitable for sample collection; collect nasal exudate on BOTH ENDS of the swab.
